New versions? [curiosity piqued]

Namely, Minako Arisato; is the name familiar to you at all?

[Naoto readjusted her screen, looking up to make sure neither Mitsuru or Fuuka could overhear her.]

She had arrived months before my time here, but disappeared around the same amount of time I had arrived. However, according to one of my employees who was good friends with her, Arisato-san has returned, but with no memories of Saeng Seong.

[Pausing a moment, she shook her head.]

Meanwhile, Steve Rogers apparently left Saeng Seong for a period of 3 days, only to return-- after several decades had passed in his world, and quite physically changed in terms of stature, but not age. According to him, this was due to a serum he took back in his world. But he recognized me on sight, so it's certainly the same one I knew...

[he listens while Naoto speaks, and then his eyes light up with realization]

Ah! The same thing happened to Canada! He was here when I arrived, then left, and then he came back some time later, but had no recollection of being in Saeng Seong.

I see... so it has happened before.

[Now Naoto has begun typing something into her laptop, before focusing back on the camera.]

Not to mention, the senpai I have here, though he looks and reacts exactly like the one I have in my own world, and for all intents and purposes is the same-- he has a different name. I knew him as Souji Seta, and here he's known as Yu Narukami. And the others who come from our world seem to have differences as well.

[With sigh, Naoto shook her head.]

So we could deduce from this that not only are there multiple worlds, but even the same world may have alternate versions. Your Canada may be the same one from your world, and has just forgotten, or he may be from a slightly different universe all together, but for the most part the same person...

~~[Like, the only difference being in this one universe America got KFC one night instead of McDonald's.]~~

I... see... That is a bit worrisome. Just how many versions of our worlds could there be?

Honestly? And infinite number. The Many-World Theory of Quantum Mechanics states that any and every decision someone makes from their day to day lives creates alternate worlds with different variations.

...Of course, I don't exactly have a great handle on Quantum Theory, so that's about the limit of my knowledge in that regard.

[She's smart, but she's an investigator, not a physicist.]

I have heard that once or twice. [or a bajillion times. he watches Dr Who, man, and believes in alternate universes. that stuff's fascinating, at least in practice. now that he's actually faced with it being a possibility, England's a bit scared]

If the machine here has access to different worlds, and different versions of worlds, I wonder why it doesn't bring the same people back. I would think bringing back the same people would be more helpful.

[Yeah well, She watches Inspector Space-Time so maybe they should totally geek out about BBC Sci-fi shenanigans together.]

Hmm... well, part of the reason people get sent back from what I can assertain is that we still can get sick while here; sick enough that even touch can't cure it. Perhaps sometimes they realise the person is incompatible from one universe, but not from another due to minor changes in that world? And other times, the person is drawn back from the original universe after some time has passed because they're more stable now.

Of course, this is all speculation...

Of course. But what you say is plausible. I only hope they were sent back home and... not someplace else.

[a beat] Ah, I'm sorry I'm not helpful. I do like hearing your theories. The point is that we just cannot know for sure.

Well, with Steve Rogers at least, we have proof they were sent home originally...

No, it's alright, England-san. [She offered him a small smile] It's good to discuss theories and other situations out loud instead of just keeping them to myself.

[blink! he looks up]

Proof? What sort of proof? [how is it possible to have proof for a situation like this?]

[Whoops, that was a slip of the tongue...]

Ah, 'proof' was the wrong word to use, forgive me; evidence is more appropriate. But, from what Rogers-san told me, he was sent back to exactly where he was supposed to be; before an experiment that physically changed his body to that of a super human. So from at least one returnee, we have evidence that they do attempt to return guests to their original time and place.

[Wait, that gave her an idea, a small smile crossing her lips.]

Actually, this does give me some ideas; perhaps it is well warranted to contact those who have knowledge of their being brought back and forth and interview them about what they remember.

That might be a good idea, though I'm still not certain how you'd know if they were telling the truth, either.

Hmm, are you implying they'd be lying, or that perhaps their memories were altered...?

No, that's a fair concern to have. It pays to be cautious, after all.

What else happened here, before my arrival? I only know of those spirits of sorts that were here in October...

Well, there was a summer festival back when I first got here. At that time, it seemed like a lot more foreigners were in the city. Several of my colleagues had been brought here with me, but they disappeared not long after that. I was also here when the city experienced the power outage...

[Naoto can be too, but someone needs to be an optimist...]

Power outage... do you mean the one back in November?

Ah, yes. That one. Other than that, I don't remember anything out of the ordinary.

Were you affected at all by those... 'spirits', around October?

...The spirits. I can't believe I forgot about that. Yes, yes I was! Miss Granger and I... [oh, there's another friend. so many people leaving] Well, we were able to make the best out of that situation.

I only read about it briefly, so I don't know exactly what it did... if you wouldn't mind enlightening me, I'd appreciate it.

[A pause]... I understand if that's uncomfortable, of course. [He looked so sad...]

[he was mostly sad about losing Hermione and Draco. England can only hope they are back at Hogwarts safe and sound]

Mm, well, it was a while ago. But the visions were... I believe they were brothers, and something bad had happened to them. They passed their fear onto me somehow, and I became... paralyzed with dread. I ran through the marketplace and collided with miss Granger.
