Summer Gigs

[The feed starts, and Ramza's already giving the two odd, ostrich-like birds behind him an exasperated look. The yellow one seems concerned; the red-feathered one... more cavalier than anything else.]

Another clutch... by now I might as well say they're making a habit of this. Three, this time.

[Fortunately, that means it's a routine endeavor for him as well. He arches his back slightly and hefts an item up to the frame. The oval shape and off-white color is familiar enough to just about anyone, and it's not a stretch to imagine that the two Chocobos behind him were the parents.]

As before-- [He took a moment to adjust his grip.] --I'll happily offer the eggs to any guests willing to foster them. In being hand-reared they will better work with humans, and I cannot hope to look after three chicks on my own.

[As if answering Ramza's reply, another yellow bird- somewhat smaller, but mature nonetheless- timidly plods into the frame, already fit with a saddle. But Ramza soon placates her with a well-practiced scratch behind her headcrest, and carefully sets the egg into her saddlebags.]

And further, we've one here whose caretaker has left Saeng Seong, and I would rather find her some human company as well. Her name is Salali... if you would put in a lot for the eggs, pray consider adopting her instead.

[A last pat on the head and she strides away to join the others. The red hen wastes no time in preening her headfeathers back into their proper smoothness.]

[Have a very excited robot]

Oh my gosh, what are those?!

[Have a somewhat confused human. Machines weren't exactly his forte...]

They are Chocobos. A flightless bird from my own world... we oft make use of them as pets, if not war mounts and beasts of burden.

And you want people to help raise them?!

[He's actually bouncing slightly in front of the camera.]

Well... yes.

[And now he's especially confused. Call him old-fashioned but he wasn't used to seeing this much emotion or enthusiasm from constructs.]

Though I should warn you they're far removed from common birds.

[He waves a hand dismissively.]

I took care of a Robo-Baby once, how hard could taking caring of little baby birdie be?

[There were totally no mishaps involving the Robo-Baby. They got it back to Doc Greene safe and sound!]

A what?

[You can almost hear his mind blow a fuse.]

Do constructs not simply... remain as they were crafted?

Well, most of the time, I guess. Unless you're talking about transforming.

[He looks contemplative.]

The Robo-Baby was a robot that was meant to act like a baby. It was really cute.

[He clutches his hands by the side of his face, smiling fondly.]

Of course.

[...Maybe he should have considered that. Someone out there could want a child-like construct, though it would be an odd novelty nonetheless...]

Very well; I'll note your name for the drawing. But I should ask, do you aim to make a mount of it?

Um. I don't think any of your birdies are big enough to carry me.

[Not quite 10-foot alien robots tend to be a bit... heavy.]

Besides, you don't need to ride much of anything when you can fly!

[He turns slightly to show off the helicopter rotors folded on his back]

Nor I. [Even an eight-foot-tall flesh-and-blood rider was too large for many birds, but at least there was no mistaking that point here.

Less clear, however, was the purpose of those four blades upon the robot's back. He'd assumed it some manner of scabbard, but they were meant for flight...?]

...what are those things upon your back?

Hm? [He thought it would have been pretty clear! He doesn't consider that somebody might not be familiar with helicopters.] They're rotor blades! You know, like on a helicopter? Because that's what I transform into.

[It might have been, were Blades not talking to someone who's still amazed by the fact that Saeng Seong has hot running water.]

That they are blades is plain enough, though I have never heard of a helicopter.

What, really?

[He's kind of shocked! But then, maybe he shouldn't be. There's people from all sorts of places in Saeng Seong.]

Well, a helicopter is, well... this!

[Backing away so that the camera can get a good shot of him, with a sound of shifting metal he proceeds to transform into a small - smaller than usual! - orange and white rescue 'copter.]

By the Gods--!

[The form and function of the helicopter was entirely lost upon him; not for any lack of understanding, but more from witnessing a human-looking construct undergo a gut-wrenching series of contortions and eversion that left Ramza wincing at the start and entirely horrified by the end.]

Are-- are you alright?!

Of course!

[Blades unfolds back into his robot form.]

It's just transforming. That's why we're called Transformers!

Oh...

[It was an interesting trick, if a little bit difficult to watch for the first time. How silly that discomfort seemed in hindsight...

Though, with that hindsight came the inkling that he'd seen such a shape before.]

...Come to think of it, I had seen similar blades in my homeworld, upon the ruins of an airship. But that ship had more the look of a nautical boat, not a... bizarre carriage.

An airship that looks like a boat?

[That sounds a bit odd. The airships he immediately thinks of look like giant balloons, not boats...

Then a little lightbulb goes off in his head.]

Oh, like they have in those Terminal Dream games Cody showed me?

[Because if the guy doesn't know what helicopters are, he will definitely know what video games are.]

I've only ever glanced at them. [Why did everyone keep making that comparison?

But perhaps he could cut to the point in functional understanding...]

Do you flap them like a bird's wings?

[Or, you know, lack thereof.]

[He laughs and waves a hand.]

No, no, they spin!

[He twirls a finger in a circle.]

Like a... like a baby's mobile!

[How in the world could that lift something into the air?

But it would explain the big, mechanical masts on the ship. And the apparent lack of sails. Ramza mimics the finger motion, staring off into space as he ponders the workings of such a method.]

...I see.

[Nope, still clueless. But perhaps that wasn't important.]

An impressive feat all the more, to fly without magic.

Aw, it's just science! I mean, it's not like I invented the helicopter or anything, I just transform into one...

Flying with magic actually sounds a lot more impressive.

[Because... Magic! Magic is cool!]

Perhaps to you, but such science was long lost in my homeland; the relics of a bygone age.

Magic was common enough to have a mystic fly in strides across a battlefield, but you would not see a boat lifted so!

Wow!

[He's clearly still impressed by the idea of someone flying with magic.]

How did you manage to lose your science?

[Asks the robot whose species managed to lose a ton of ancient and apparently irreplicable technology all over Earth.]

[A post about potential pets? You have Kit's interest, good sir!]

I've sorta been thinking about getting a pet. And your birds look really nice!

[She's especially drawn to Salali. She doesn't know about taking care of a baby, but... Salali was all alone now. She knew how hard that was.

Still, she recognized a potential problem.]

Dunno if one would fit in my apartment, though...

It would fit well enough, before it reaches full size. You've well enough time to rear it by hand.

[Of course, the already-hatched bird hasn't escaped his thoughts as a possibility.]

And we've ample room for them here once they are grown. Though at least one had taken to nesting beneath the trees by housing...

[The red Chocobo behind him picks up her head attentively, but- mindful of the camera- tries to act nonchalant.]

Actually... I was thinking more of Salali.

I mean, a baby would be nice, but it'd also be a lot of work, and I dunno if I'd be able to take care of it the way it'd need. I don't really know much about taking care of babies, and what I did know probly wouldn't work for baby birds anyway.

But Salali's all alone here now, and since I'm alone here too... I know how hard that is. And I wanna help, if I can.

[The fact that Salali was being given precedence in the girl's mind was actually more comfort than anything else. Here he was worried he'd have a hard time of finding adopters...

Still, that did pose a unique dilemma.]

She would always have room here, though I doubt that would make it easier for you... though I had seen her escape often enough to visit her former owner's home; a few times she even found a way inside.

You would not need to always keep her close in seeing to her care, if that is your concern; she's mostly grown, after all. She mostly wants for companionship.

Companionship I can do! That's easy. And I don't mind coming down there to spend time with her if that's what you mean.

But it's OK if she comes and visits my apartment sometimes too. Though hopefully she won't try to get into anybody else's; they probly wouldn't like that.

Though... maybe I should come down there and meet her first, just to make sure we get along OK and everything. If that's OK?

[Animals had likes and dislikes just like people, after all, and if it turned out that Salali didn't didn't like her, well... there went that idea.]

[Well, this one's got a good enough head on her shoulders. He wasn't sure why she thought herself irresponsible.]

If you wish. Though I doubt she would turn down your company.

[He peers into the monitor, regarding Kit's appearance for a while longer. She didn't have quite the same accent or look about her as Y'akeno, but there was that feline touch to her features...]

You've not seen such birds before?

Alright. I'll come over once we're done talking here.

[She shakes her head no at the question, though.]

Uh-uh. We don't have them back on Third Earth. Well, not that I've seen anyway.

As you would. I will be here 'til nightfall.

[The mention of her home earns Kit a curious look, though.]

...Third Earth? I had heard of 'Earth' from the other newcomers, but no such a place as that. I had seen some other guests with looks a bit like yours, but they all spoke of a different world.

Yeah. Nobody here seems to have heard of it; I think I'm the only one here from there.

[The mention of others like her perks her interest, though.]

You've seen other cats like me, though? Where were they from?

It had an odd name... Eorzea, if my memory does not fail me. Y'akeno hailed from there.

You two weren't quite alike, but it sounds as though you two truly are worlds apart. My apologies.

[Lenalee couldn't help but thing those were adorable looking birds. Funky, but adorable.]

They are pretty cute, but why does one of them have a saddle?

[How can only ride giant birds?]

Ah-- I was fitting her for it. If Salali's new owner would aim to make a mount of her, then...

[He winces.]

...their feathers do not lend well to bareback riding.

[She pauses slightly.]

How exactly does riding them work anyway? I mean I've never really seen such a thing before.

As one might ride any animal. A saddle for the rider, a press from the heels to set the bird in motion, and reins to guide its course.

[He thinks for a moment.]

I've heard guests compare it to a 'horse,' if you've heard of it. [He hadn't until he'd arrived...]

[Well... she at least knew what a horse was never the less, so it makes sense, but still... it's a bird. it's still a really odd thought.]

So riding them is the norm here, or something?

[Now that she thinks about it maybe she is asking one too many questions.]

I do apologize for all the questions, I haven't been here very long, so trying to understand it.

Think naught of it. Our arrival came as a shock to all of us.

Though I know not if I would call it the norm... these were bred from stock of my own world, after all; Saeng Seong knew naught of Chocobos beforehand, apart from one or two guests.

[He'd met a guest who had brought his own horse, as well, but he wasn't sure if even that was normal...]

[Well, Lenalee certainly was impressed.]

So they were something from your world? [She gives a small smile.] Would you mind if I asked if I am allowed to get a closer look?

They were, and it was a boon to see them follow me through. These two in particular have long been faithful war-mounts.

Not at all. You've little to fear from these ones; they're far removed from their feral cousins. [Those were a force to be feared...]

You mean there are wild ones as well where your from?

[Which makes sense since there are also such things as wild horses too. So why not wild chocobos?]

There are, and they've felled more than their fair share of careless merchants and knights. Persephone, the red one- [The one who raised her head at the mention-] -was taken in from the wild, and held her own admirably even against a squad of soldiers.

[Carefully omitting the detail of Persephone's defeat with the bird's glare on the back of his head...]

[Colour her impressed that they can at least take care of themselves like that.]

That's.... really impressive. But it's good to know they won't get hurt at leas here, right? Though, I can honestly say I don't really know much about this place to really say.

No, I share those sentiments- [And hopes, in those times where his faith in Saeng Seong's safety waned...]- though I admit I'm not without doubts of my own.

Nonetheless I would sooner see them here than on the battlefield, or fending off goblins and panthers in the wild.

[She nods slightly.]

I think I would prefer what as well. I think I'd prefer no one to be in a war though if I'm too be honest.

I would like that. I mean it could possibly be something I could do around here while I am here.
