[Video] w/optional [Action] In Memorandum...
Hi everyone! I hope you are having a good day!
[Diarmuid waves excitedly at the screen for a moment, before having to move quickly to catch the strange little animal that starts to slide out of his lap.]
Sorry about that, Lir. I guess I waved too hard...
[The creature makes a soft burbling sound and blows a bubble at Diarmuid. The bubble bumps against the boy's nose and breaks causing him to giggle. He then turns his attention back to the terminal.]
Is there anyone here who remembers me talking about wanting to have a ceremony to celebrate all of our friends who have been sent away? I would like to have it next month by the river. There should be food and maybe even some activities, since the point is to have fun remembering our friends instead of being sad. At the end, I want to put candles out on the river floating in boats to send our wishes for our friends to them!
Will you guys help me out? Please? Lets do something nice for all the people who aren't here anymore! You don't need to have lost someone to come or help either. We're all friends here, right?
[Action]
[A few hours after making his request for help, Diarmuid can be found down by the river running up and down it looking for the best spot to have the ceremony--maybe 'festival' would be a better word--at. Lir bobs in the river following along with him the best he can. Every so often, Diarmuid stops and looks around, making gestures and talking to Lir as he tries to picture where everything will go if this is the place he picks.
He certainly won't mind if anyone stops to talk to him about the festival. After all, he's still trying to work everything out...]

He certainly won't mind if anyone stops to talk to him about the festival. After all, he's still trying to work everything out...]
[He bows his head politely, and Lir trumpets welcomingly.]
Lir says hi too!
That is why I really want to do this! It would make them happy, and I think it will make us happier too. I know it's easy to focus on being sad when people leave, but we wouldn't have gotten to meet these people at all if we didn't get brought here. We should celebrate that instead of focusing on them being gone!
It's like, nice to meet the both of you, too...!
And you make like, a totally good point. We're only sad because knowing them made us all really happy, right? So celebrating all that time we spent with those people only makes sense... [She smiles. When people seem to leave on a regular basis, a party to celebrate having known them sounds pretty good.] Okay! I'll do whatever you need to help make this a success, alright? I bet it'll make a lot of people like, really happy!
[Diarmuid pauses a moment to think on what would be the most helpful and then nods as he comes to a decision.]
You mentioned food earlier. Is it okay if you make something for people to eat? My brother and I...we aren't very good at cooking. Things tend to end up being burned...
[And no one will want to eat burned food!]
[This kid seems pretty young, though. It makes her wonder.]
But if you and your brother don't cook...do you guys have a friend who helps you out with that kind of thing?
[She kind of hopes they do. She can't imagine eating premade stuff everyday, especially at such a young age...]
[Asking her to make a lot of things with honey in them probably wouldn't be the best idea, even if Diarmuid himself thinks it's a great one.]
What kind of food do celebrations like this usually have?
[That might be a better route than just asking for all sweets...]
We used to have some friends who cooked or helped us to cook, but they have left now. We usually buy stuff and sometimes we cook on our own, but...it usually doesn't turn out so well. I'm getting better at making soup, though! Sandwiches too!
[Those are party foods, right? Though, she wonders if they're the kind of thing for this kind of celebration. However, now she's got her mind on other things.]
W-Well, soup and sandwiches are pretty good...but it's important to eat other stuff, too. ...If you want, I can help you with cooking things sometimes. I've been teaching myself a little, so maybe we can all practice together. [She doesn't say "teach" because...well, she doesn't know if she trusts herself to really teach anyone anything. But practicing is okay, right?]
That sounds about right!
[And there is even something sweet!]
It is what they have for the new arrivals so it is easy for them to take along. It will be good for the party too!
Practicing together sounds like fun! There is a lot I want to try, but I am worried about trying it alone. If you help me, I bet it will go a lot better and I will learn a lot more!
[Offering to help out these younger kids makes her feel a bit more like an adult and she can't help but feel just a little pleased with herself. She grabs a nearby piece of paper and starts writing things down.]
Is there anything you can think of that you'd want to try making?
[Diarmuid honestly does try thinking, but there is one little problem...]
I am from the past so I don't know a lot about modern foods. Maybe we should go with some of your favorite foods? Or I like honey and my brother likes chocolate! Maybe things that have those in them!
[If they could live off sweets, they would. Typical kids...]
She takes a second to think about what they could make. Honey and chocolate, huh...?]
...Oh! Maybe we could try chocolate chip pancakes! They're not too hard, so that might be good to start off with before we try to practice anything more complicated.
That sounds really good! I've had pancakes before only they had fruit in them! I haven't had them with chocolate before. My brother will really like that.
There is another thing that is kind of like pancakes, but with bread and eggs... Something 'toast.'
[He frowns.]
I don't remember the full name. Do you know what I am talking about?
Oh! I think you mean French Toast! Yeah, I definitely know that! We can make that, too, if you want.
[Of course, he puts honey on it instead of maple syrup. Is anyone surprised?]
You can mix lots of things into French Toast too! Pancakes and French Toast are such fun foods!
[Though "fancy" is kind of a relative term in this case. She's not exactly an expert chef, after all.]
I should probably worry about getting the basics down before I get too fancy.
[He giggles.]
But learning foods that are easy to make fancy it good! What other foods are like that?
[She's actually having fun sharing what she knows about cooking with Diarmuid. Then again, food is probably one of her favorite subjects.]
[Because he wants to try all the new foods. Every single one!]
Spaghetti is fun to say. Spaghetti. Spaghetti! I hope it is fun to eat too!
Spaghetti is kinda long and thin, while rice is like, a grain so it's all small and stuff. [She feels like her explanation is really lacking so far. She's never really had to put this much thought into what spaghetti and rice actually are.] By themselves, they're like, kinda bland and plain, but when you cook other things with them you can make lots of different stuff!
Spaghetti is kinda fun to eat, I guess. You get to twist it all around your fork and it's all long and noodley and stuff.
[Diarmuid balances Lir carefully and then puts his arms out and wiggles them like a pair of noodles...or at least what he thinks noodles would be like.]
The rice doesn't sound like as much fun.
[It actually sounds a little bit like something they have at home. Not exactly, but close enough.]
Can we try spaghetti first? What kind of things can you make it with?
Sure, we can try spaghetti first. Let's see...well, most people like to make spaghetti with tomato sauce and meatballs. Or you can stir fry it with vegetables and meat. Spaghetti salad, spaghetti casserole...there's an awful lot of stuff you can do with it.
And I guess rice really isn't as fun as spaghetti...but you can make just as much stuff out of it.
[Of course, he wants to try them all, but he knows they have to start with one at a time.]
There is so much food I want to try. So many different things I have never heard of before...
Thank you so much for helping me! You are wonderful!
[A tiny bit of pride swells up within her at his words of thanks. She can't help but grin.]
W-Well, I don't know about wonderful. I mean, if you like food, then of course you want to share what you know about cooking with other people, right? That way they can try lots of good food, too!
Sorry. I get excited! What kind of meat do you use? Answer that one first, please!
[The boy nods along with her next words.]
Yes! It is good to share that kind of information, but I don't know if I am good enough to teach anyone else how to cook yet. That is why I need help! I should practice more first!
[The only thing he would be good at teaching right now is probably how to burn soup and no one wants to know how to do that!]
[She claps her hands together and smiles.]
And...well, I think we could both use more practice. So, let's both practice and work really hard so we can share lots of totally awesome things with everyone! After all, Grandma always used to say that food tastes better when you're sharing it with other people.
[Diarmuid nods again excitedly and then his expression grows thoughtful.]
I am thinking about having the festival around the 25th of next month. That will give us a lot of time to practice and prepare. Does that sound okay to you?
