So, funny story.
[ Never a good way to start a conversation. From the sheepish expression on her face, this is clearly no exception. She even laughs a little nervously. ]
There's this great classic movie called King Kong that apparently nobody has heard of because as it turns out I really am in another universe and not just dreaming or high as a kite.
[ As it also turns out, Steph has prepared for this story with a number of drawings, one of which she holds up for the camera. It depicts a little cartoony island with a giant skull shaped mountain to one side, a gigantic gorilla roaring and beating its chest on the other. ]
In this movie, there's a film crew and they decide to go to 'skull island' to shoot their movie. Totally obvious, right? Well it was made in the thirties, so I doubt they'd seen enough horror flicks to know better. Surprise surprise, there's a giant frickin' gorilla living on the island. He's King Kong.
[ She points out the gorilla, then turns to a new drawing: A cartoon of a brunette woman in a dress looking terrified, tied between two poles, and the giant gorilla opposite her with hearts for eyes. ]
The natives spot the film crew's pretty lead actress and try to sacrifice her to the giant frickin' gorilla, who decides he likes the gorgeous lady. From this point on she is the quintessential Damsel In Distress.
[ And the third and final drawing: The classic image of Kong on the empire state building, holding a girl too small to be more than a stick figure, planes flying around him, all in cartoony style. ]
Shenanigans happen, they go to New York, Kong kidnaps the girl, but he decides not to eat her and then the army kills him. That's it, that's King Kong.
[ Finally she sets the drawings aside and gives the camera a sort of helpless smile. ]
The damsel in distress was played by a talented woman named Fay Wray. She is not me. That was a joke that nobody got. Ha ha, joke's on me. I'm Stephanie Brown. Hi. [ She waves nervously. ] And also sorry.
[ Private to Megan Morse/M'gann M'orzz ]
Still want to go shopping with me? [ She looks wryly resigned, yet still hopeful. She has no idea how people are going to react to her reveal. Hopefully the doodles have softened the blow. ]
[ Private to Barbara Gordon ]
[ And finally, a cheeky grin. ] I totally had you going though.
