[For fourteen seconds, all any can hear is a faint static coming from all devices connected to the city network. Cellphones, terminals, communication devices of any kind... Perhaps a whisper or two in the background, but nothing that could be truly made out behind the din. However, fifteen seconds after midnight, the flames of the candles all mysteriously light themselves if they weren't already lit, and the voices become clear as crystal. It is all one: male, judging by the bass tone and, for those watching, dark silhouette amidst a blindingly white glare.]

Good evening, guests of our most... esteemed science division and citizenry. Many of you may question why it is that suddenly, a thin veil has overtaken parts of the town since the annual summer festival. I am here to answer that question and more.

[The figure bows deeply before raising to full height.]

Unfortunate as it may be, there are but few means to enter the walls when they have been closed. This much has been true since the days when the gates between districts were wide, and trade flourished. For all its talk of community and friendship, these traits the leaders have always kept exclusive to those within than those without. Therefore, we who remain in the wastes forced our way in.

[The figure lifts his arms, a pompous air about him as he speaks.]

Yes, it was those of our number a small band of you located three months prior. The young ones, who left the writings on the walls. I, who first successfully hacked into their networks. All for the sake of this day, that I might speak to you all freely without the censorship of our most esteemed scientists.

In the many months of our silent vigil outside these grand walls, we have come to realize a simple truth: the leaders and this society have little interest in educating any of its so-called "guests" in any means other than simply lengthening your lifespans as well as their own. A state of stagnation, rather than slow death. Those from the shrine, like your sweet High Priestess can do aught but leak that which they are "allowed" to by the heads of the different science divisions. Or perhaps none among you found it odd that rather than Rhea responding to our more zealous members, it was the one who wished to silence any attempt to speak out against their own agenda?

[he bows deeply once more.]

As the leader of this band of mischief makers, I do apologize for their disruption of your daily lives. However, we of the Rangar do not believe in stagnation, but in an active course against the pseudoscience these defectors and skeptics practice. With how many candles were lit of the listener's volition tonight, I need not ask what it is you seek.

The door is open for all. The seeker need only speak.

[The feed then ends, but so long as the candles are lit, there seems to be no reaction in order to silence this apparent leader.

But when the flames go out, only the following text can be seen:]

THIS ENTRY HAS BEEN FLAGGED AND BEEN REMOVED FOR FALSE INFORMATION AND SLANDER AGAINST THE RULING PARTIES OF THE CITY.

[The sound of her voice is low, muted. She's cupped her hand to her commlink's receiver and is speaking low into it.]

Still there, right? I'm gonna assume you know how to secure this feed.

[She glances over to the flickering violet candle, curled up in the shadow of a trash bin in an alley. Not that it's visible.]

I've thought something was wrong from the moment I showed up, but just didn't have any way to prove it - and even if I did, no way to act on it without endangering innocent people. That's not the way I do things.

Now, I don't think you're telling us this out of the goodness of your heart. Clearly, you want our help for something, and I don't think they'll like it. So before you tell me anything, tell me this: can you provide a place where we can be safe if things go south? Where people like children and other people who can't fight can hide? They don't seem like they mean us any harm, but what they intend may mean nothing, in the end.

... What's all this about lengthening lives? Nobody said nothin' about that before now.

Just who are you?
dadcepticon: (Communications suite keeps flatlining.)

And what, exactly, makes you any more trustworthy than them?

[He hated to admit it, but... this hit a lot closer to him than he wished it did.

But he'd start small.]

How do you survive outside the walls?

Dear Lucifer in the Labyrinth below, why was she stuck in a religious/philosophical war all over again? Humans didn't change at all from world to world.

"You speak like a Reason bearer. What's your philosophy? By 'an active course', are you implying destroying the world and building a new one?"

Because Shura is getting some practise at surviving the end and killing everyone to go win the 'Make new world' prize.

You might not like the new world she'd make out of Saeng Soeng.

[Diarmuid follows, first the sound of the static and then the voice, to the nearest terminal with his lit violet candle in hand. He settles the candle on the terminal, before focusing on what the strange man is saying and what it all means. It's hard for him to understand, not just because of his age, but also because he has only been on the very edges of the events the man is mentioning. Once he has understood as well as he thinks he will be able to, the boy finally speaks.]

But...they have never hurt us.

[That he knows of.]

Why would they hurt you? Isn't it hard being out there?

Of course they don't...

All right. You got my attention. What kinda catastrophe. An' why lock people out.

Near the shrine? [Seems odd. She'll let it slide for now. Truth is, she's suspicious of him just as much - after all, he was the one who attacked them with the snowmen, or their leader, at least.]

Okay. So let's hear your pitch. What do you want from us?

I have no proof you're not part of this. Or that these theatrics aren't just some scheme. You'll have to try harder.

Warped? So you survive on touch as well?

Know you, then, the cause for our withering?

[Mukuro watched and listened, hunched over her e-handbook, glaring at the feed. This new development hardly surprised her, even without the context of the previous events she'd missed. Being dragged from her home by these strangers, told to just "hug and be happy and make friends!!" like it was some ridiculous children's show, it all stank of conspiracy. Of course this theatrical hacker was hardly trustworthy himself, but she'd take almost anything that wasn't another vague brushing-off. She tapped angrily at the screen.]

You talk a lot without saying much. Why do they pull us here? How do we leave? And what do you want us to do to them, exactly?

[She wasn't much for intel or leadership, she just wanted to figure out what the hell was going on.]

And where is this door?

[Because it's much safer to speak in person-- or at least an approximation of it. The network isn't safe, and she doesn't trust it. Not at a time like this.]
lightstrike: (Each moment's breath I want to taste)

Are they as forthcoming as you?
