1st Adventure [Video/Action] June 11, late morning

[Pippin has a chair he's pushed over in front of one of the terminals in the lobby of Building 2 to stand on, and he's spent the past half an hour fiddling around with the terminal itself. Now he's finally got it right, and he's peering through the camera, onto the network.

He looks like he hasn't been sleeping well at all, but he's got a smile anyway, because that's what Pippin does.]

Ah. Um. Hello? Hello! I'm... I'm Pippin. I'm from the Shire, in Middle Earth. I've never seen anywhere like this before, I've got to say. Not even Citagazze was quite like this!

[The smile turns a bit sheepish when he gets around to why he's done this.]

I was wondering... is anyone interested in swapping rooms? I just really... don't much like being so high up. It's really kind of hard to get comfortable, when you're used to living in a hobbit hole, really. If anyone has a ground floor room, I'd be happy to trade mine. It's a very nice room, I'm sure, but it's just not so good for a hobbit.

I'll be down here in the lobby, building two, if you want to trade keys.

How high up are you? I'm on the second floor, but my building doesn't have any rooms on the first floor.

First floor, I'm afraid. My building doesn't seem to have any rooms on the ground floor, but I'm hoping someone else has found some and won't mind trading.

[Otherwise, well... Hobbit gonna hafta adjust somehow or another.]

Oh, and I'm Peregrine Took. You can call me Pippin, for shorter, everybody does. Pleased to meet you! If you can call it meeting over these screen things, exactly. It seems a bit odd not to see you in person.

Sounds like we're in the same building. Sorry about that. [ She shrugs. Hey, she tried. ]

I'm Stephanie Brown, but you can call me Steph. Where I'm from meeting through a screen isn't really that uncommon.

We don't even have anything like these screens where I'm from.

[Pippin looks a bit embarrassed by that. Middle Earth sure does seem backward compared to here! Not that he minds living without touchscreens. And hot showers. And really tall buildings.]

But, well, hello Steph. It's all right. I just figured asking couldn't hurt anything.

Hey, don't worry about it. I figure there's some time travel to go with these alternate universes. May as well throw all the sci-fi themes in there.

Well, world-jumping, at least, yes! I was somewhere else before, too, so this isn't my first time someplace unexpected. I don't think my world is much like anyone else's, though. No one else has ever heard of a hobbit.

Hobbit, huh? Can't say I have. Unless you're just saying hermit really strangely. [ Worth asking, right? Anyway she figured they were all from different universes. That seems to be this place's theme. ]

I'm sorry, did you say you did some world-hopping before you came here?

Oh, not much, really. Just one. It was a place called Citagazze and there were little holes, windows they called them, between worlds you could take. I never really got the chance, though. I went through mine into theirs, and then a few weeks later they sent me back. I guess with the regime change, they didn't need us around anymore really.

[ She blinks at him in disbelief. ]

Seriously? You just... popped around, just like that?

Not exactly! It was only the one time, and the one window. Then they sent us back after the place got attacked. Like I said, I didn't really get the chance to go anywhere else.

Well, except here, but I don't think that's really the same thing.

Huh.

[ She considers that for a long moment. Then she seems to remember that she's on a video feed. ]

Well that's weird! But probably not the same deal, no.

No, not really, since that one happened mostly because I wanted it to. I could have not gone through that window, after all.

[He grins.]

But that wouldn't have been any fun.

[ That earns a grin in response. She can appreciate the sense of adventure, even if she would really prefer that she hadn't been kidnapped. ]

Maybe we'll find a window home, here.

Oh, that would be nice. I'd only just gotten back, you see, and now my family is going to worry all over again now that I've gone and vanished. Or, I suppose, they'll just say "of course he did, it's Pippin!" and then not worry at all.

[Each was equally as likely, and both were likely to happen, just with different people.]

[ She snorts. Sounds about right. ]

Yeah, I know how you mean. I hope nobody is too worried about us, back home.

[Legolas has no problems with the terminals or much of the technology here. A year in the Tower of Animus would do that. The elf can only stare for a moment in quiet disbelief.]

Pippin...

[He doesn't smile but his eyes, tired and worn, lighten a bit at the sight of the hobbit. He missed Sam and Frodo already, even if they had been forced to endure the same fate as he had.]

I'm afraid that my room is on the third floor and would do little to help you.

[And here's a startled but pleased look for you, Legolas. Pippin very nearly falls off his chair in surprise, in fact, but he recovers and beams at his friend, even if he hasn't really seen him in a while.]

Legolas! What a wonderful surprise! I didn't know you were here, too!

[He smiles, just a little bit, at the hobbit. He can't really say that he's been avoiding going out more than necessary.]

I had no idea you were here either, Pippin. Although, surprises seem to be common as I've also met my king while here.

Oh goodness, there's three of us from Middle Earth?

[Pippin is a little excited by the prospect. Even if the other two are elves, not hobbits, that's still pretty wonderful.]

You should come down to the lobby here! I'd love to catch up. See what you've been doing since the Ring was destroyed, and all that!

There are though don't get too excited at the prospect. My Lord, I'm sure, is not at all pleased to be away from the Woodland Realm.

[But Legolas is obviously pleased with the idea of there being three of them. It makes him more comfortable to have free and friendly faces nearby.

Oh, but that laugh part gets him to laugh, very softly but there's something else to it. Surprise maybe? He can't quite place it.]

You've seen the end of the war as well?

Oh, certainly. Everything's taken care of, things are settling down again. I've been back at the Shire for almost a year now. Or, I was before I found a hole in the garden and tried going through it.

[Obviously, this should not be surprising to Legolas, that he'd give this a try.]

It's been over one hundred and fifty years since I saw the end of the war. I was preparing to sail across the Sea to the West with Gimli when...

[The world ended. Or so he was told. But not focusing on that. Instead, he raises one brow and tries not to laugh.]

Tried to crawl in a hole in the ground?

[It's really not surprising but he just has to ask to make sure he's not hearing things.]

Oh, no, a hole in the air. The people from Citagazze call it a window, or sometimes a portal. But it really just looked like a hole in the air, like you were looking through it into somewhere else. I wanted to see where it went.

[He shrugs, innocent and a little bit amused. It is something he'd do, after all.]

So you're from a hundred and fifty years later? I really wasn't gone that long. I wonder how that happened?

[He really shouldn't look so incredulous at the idea of a hole in there air. Really he shouldn't... but he does. And it does sound like something Pippin would investigate.]

Time passes differently when we're not connected to Arda as we were. Or so I've learned from seeing others. Aragorn, Boromir, Faramir... Even Gimli and Haldir.

[He lightly touches the ring he's been wearing since arriving.]

Gandalf couldn't entirely make sense of it either.

What do you mean? Oh, nevermind what you mean just now, come down to the lobby, tell me in person. I want to hear the whole story!

[He even makes a beckoning motion at the screen, as if that might help convince the elf to visit him.]

[He laughs softly but nods. Seeing Pippin in person is definitely better than this.]

Alright, I will see you shortly.

Good, good! I'll be here!

[And there he is, too, whenever Legolas makes it down there, sitting on the chair he'd brought over to the touchscreen machine with his feet swinging idly. He hops right off at the sight of the elf, beaming.

Legolas probably doesn't expect the wallaby who climbs to her own over-large feet when Pippin moves.]

Legolas!

[Legolas is armed when he comes down, of course, but only with a knife hanging at his side. Better to go lightly armed, especially since Pippin is his friend. He smiles at the sight of the hobbit, not really taking notice of the wallaby just yet.]

Pippin!

[He approaches quickly and kneels down to take a good look at the hobbit.]

[The hobbit in question is in good health, other than apparently lacking in comfortable sleep, and he's also perfectly happy to take the whole "touching" thing to heart. As Legolas kneels down, Pippin launches his arms around his neck in a hug.

Then again, that might just be Pippin in general. He's always been the more enthusiastic of the hobbits.]

Oh, it's been a long time, Legolas! It's so good to see you!

[There's a moment where Legolas actually flinches as Pippin's arms wrap around his neck and the cold metal wrapped around it. He forces himself to relax though, taking in the warmth of the hugs and wrapping his own arms around the hobbit.]

I have missed you. You look well!

[Up close, Pippin will be able to see that Legolas' eyes look more tired and his hair cut around his shoulders rather than long as it had been in their quest.]

[And Pippin notices the flinch, though he doesn't let go immediately, either, since Legolas got past it. When he does, though, it's with a concerned expression, and his hands on the elf's shoulders-- since he's so kindly still down on his level.

Now that he's looking, he can, indeed, see those differences.]

Are you all right, Legolas?

[And Legolas remains at that level, giving Pippin a small smile. 'All right' could mean a whole multitude of things and he still wasn't sure if he was. He... missed his friends in the tower. His allies.]

I am as well as I can be. And I've good company here to keep it that way.

[Pippin isn't really in the habit of questioning an elf who says he's all right-- though that wording doesn't really mean "all right", now, does it?-- so he just gives Legolas a skeptical and concerned look, then backs up to hop back up onto his chair. Feet once again dangling.]

Well, I'll do my best, anyway. How have you been? How was Gimli? He's not here, too, is he?

[Legolas stands then, watching Pippin with a smile. Even as he's given a skeptical look. If he hadn't wanted to explain to Thranduil just what had happened in the tower, there was no way he was going to burden Pippin.]

Gimli! No, unfortunately he's not. When last I saw him, he was quite the old dwarf but still as stubborn as ever. He was to sail with me to the West, a special honor that he was granted.

[Sidestepping the how he's been bit. And ignoring that Gimli was in the tower.]

Oh, that's wonderful, I know you two were very good friends by the end of it all. I'm glad you got to bring him along.

[He pauses, briefly confusing himself, since that is many years in his future.]

Or, will get to. Since I don't think that's happened yet when I remember last. He wasn't very old, at all, after all.

As am I. He earned that right and I'm sure he'll be glad to see the Lady Galadriel once more.

[Luckily, Legolas got used to the idea of everyone being from different times. Having seen Boromir in the tower really put things in perspective for him.]

If he's ever brought here, with hope, he'll not be such an old dwarf.

I hope so. I did, after all! And if Gimli was so old when you're from, I'm probably even older. I bet they wouldn't even consider bringing me, if I was that old, not for someplace like this where you're supposed to be nice about touching people. No one would want a grabby old hobbit wanting hugs from everyone.

[Not that he thinks much about when he gets old. He assumes he'll have a wife and a passel of children by then, but that's far off in the future. He's not ready to settle down yet.]

My yes! Though, charming as hobbits are, I doubt a great many people would mind.

[He can't help but laugh and oh how he needed that. The thought of a terribly old Pippin getting grabby here was hilarious. He won't mention his or Merry's passing though, despite the honor they were given in lying beside the king of Gondor.]

I'm also on the 2nd floor but it's not on the ground.

I'm on the first floor. I haven't found any ground floor rooms yet, actually... which is kind of worrisome.

[And given Pippin comes from British canon, and a very British culture within that canon, "first" means "second" and "ground" means "first". Sorry for the potential confusion :B He looks a little nervous as he replies.]

I'm not really sure I'll be able to get used to being above ground. Hobbits prefer to live under it, you know.

*Well, he didn't know, but that information is mentally filed away.*

Unless you can dig out your own home somewhere in the city.

Well, a ground floor would really be just fine. Not everyone can live in a good hole, there aren't really enough hills for that. Just, you know, not quite this high up?

[He looks sheepish at the explanation. He really feels like he's being quite the complainer, but it would be nice to sleep comfortably again.]

How far underground did you live? *He's picturing a subterranean city.*

Oh, not very. Each hole is its own living space for a family, you see, so it doesn't usually have to be very big. The Took family hole I suppose is fairly large, comparatively, but then, there are a lot of us! But it isn't very deep, it's more just extensive not far below the surface. We do like windows, after all!

[Have a babbly hobbit, Auron. Pippin really can talk when he gets going.]

So in the ground but not deep underground. *He's used to being around more talkative people.*

Right, exactly. Which is why being up on the first story is really a bit higher than I'd like. I suppose if there's no other choices, then I'll have to get by, but still. I'd much rather be on the ground, if it's all the same.

If they're giving us places to live, they assigned it randomly. So if you leave, it's just another room like any other.

I guess you'd need to find someplace to dig into. Like a park.

Oh, well. I'm really not sure how to build a proper hobbit hole. I've never done it before... but maybe if I found some help and one of the books in the library had something on building, I could work something out. Or else just hope somebody has a basement room I could rent!

That's a good way to look at it. *Guess nothing keeps you down for long, does it.*
