Ch. 1 -- Video

*The figure in the video has his eyes covered by shades and some kind of clothing that blocks his mouth. His voice is low with a bit of a rasp.*

Name's Auron. I have a question. How many other people out there are helping to take care of a small child by the name of Diarmuid? He's not telling me much. Might be nice if we could coordinate with each other since we seem to have all been adopted as Guardians.

*That seems simple and to the point. Maybe someone would respond eventually.*

[There is a familiar boy waving on the screen, Auron. That is, he is once he figures out how to turn the video on. It's the only part of the Networking systems he can use since he can't read.

He's lucky Devin took the time to show him how to do it considering how very new all this stuff is to him. It was surely a test of the man's patience.]

It'd help if I had some kind of schedule so I knew where you were sometimes.

[A confused and slightly sad look crosses Diarmuid's face.]

What's a schedule, Lord Auron? I'm sorry. I can't answer your question if I don't understand all the words...

*A patient sigh.* It means telling me where you're going to me so I can write it all down.

But...I don't usually know where I am going to be. If I told you something and then didn't do it, I would be lying and that wouldn't be nice!

[A serious look crosses the boy's face.]

If they make you lie, then schedules are bad things! I don't want to make one!

*Oh fayth. He forgot that at this stage, kids did not know how to think around a rigid pattern. It was either this or that.*

Schedules aren't bad things. They're useful and they can always be changed. Nothing has to be set in stone and if it turned out you went somewhere else, that's fine. I'd write it down.

Oh?

[The seriousness melts off Diarmuid's face and his smile returns.]

So you want to know things like when I go play in the tunnel with my friend and when I go visit Wing? Or when I decide to go adventuring and visit the third district all alone?

*Well. That was eyeopening.*

Why are you adventuring by yourself?

Because I am a knight! I might just be a little one, but I won't learn if I don't sometimes go alone!

[Diarmuid gives a confident nod as he says this.]

Don't you like to explore alone sometimes, Lord Auron?

I do, but I'm an adult and I can take care of myself. It's true that knights have to brave the wilderness but because you're not an adult, you might find yourself in a situation that you can't get yourself out of easily.

[Diarmuid tilts his head and gives Auron a confused look.]

Everyone keeps saying there might be bad people here who would hurt me, but no one has yet! Not even Deadlock and he's a Decepticon!

[Well, in all honesty, Deadlock had made him cry, but they watched the stars together after that so that made everything okay!]

Well, that is good no one's bothered you but no one knows yet how far this city goes. Just don't wander too far. *Not like he can watch the kid all the time but he knows the kid enough to worry. Just a tiny bit.*

[Diarmuid nods, his expression turning more serious.]

Don't worry, Lord Auron. I will be careful. I know some areas of the city aren't safe, and you will get sick if you go in. That is why I had to be careful when I was exploring District Three alone. Being in there made me get tired and shaky faster than it usually does. Fortunately, I was able to find someone to hug pretty easily!

*Auron nods* That was a good idea. If you feel like exploring somewhere else and you have time, you can find me.

I am trying to be re-responsible because that is what knights are! Responsible!

[The boy rocks back and forth on his heels excitedly.]

But knights do stuff alone sometimes. It's okay if I do stuff alone sometimes, right Lord Auron?

*How to answer this question? Kids always asked the questions that really made you do mental gymnastics.*

You don't have to have someone hovering over you all the time, no. Just if you're going to go somewhere uncertain, tell one of the many people you talk to so someone knows where you are, okay?

[Diarmuid gives a confident nod.]

Don't worry. I will! Knights know when it is too dangerous to explore something alone. Even little ones like me know. The story I bring back won't be any good if I get hurt!

Well, that's good to know when to back away.

I am trying! I don't want to make anyone worry about me or be sad.

[He gives Auron a curious look.]

Are you still worried about where I go and stuff, Lord Auron? Do you want to ask me anything else?

*This does remind him that kids don't like to be lectured at all the time.*

Are you enjoying living here?

It's fun! There is something adventurous about every day!

[As he speaks, his expression saddens.]

Lord Auron... I haven't seen Legolas for a long time and he never came when we went to explore the Third District even though he said he would. Do you think he's okay?

I haven't seen him around either. I wonder...I wonder if he went home somehow.

Can he go home?

[A curious look crosses Diarmuid's face.]

I didn't think any of us could go home until the energy problem was solved...

Don't know how this place works. But if they took us away, can't they put us back?

[Diarmuid nods, but he still seems confused.]

But weren't we all suppose to stay until the energy problem was fixed? I thought they said we had to stay until the problem was fixed. Only then we could go home...
