People do not trust that which is different from them. A survival mechanism from long ago that stubbornly persists to this day, to the detriment of all societies.
But now I am curious. On my world, there are stories of wizards who were burnt at the stake. Generally they are considered works of either fiction or exaggeration; but if your kind were simply hiding, that would be the best way for the populace to think of them, wouldn't it? What is the name of your world? Where do you live in it?
I do not ask in order to persecute you, of course. I have no interest in harming others purely because they are different than me.
Does your society have a magical means of fast, long-distance communication? There are some beings with "magical" powers in my world, but most people still use this technology.
